>> eighteen year old akyra murray graduated last week and set to go to mercyhurst clem for a full scholarship for basketball. she traveled to orlando with fox 29 intern patients carter recovering in the hospital. >> we are hearing from akyra's mother to bring her body home. she wants everyone to know about her daughter's kindness and largest than life spirit. >> fox 29's dave kinchen is standing by with more in west philadelphia with that story, hi there, dave. >> reporter: good morning. very difficult time. so many people connect to the west philadelphia catholic, west catholic prep, community here, after one of the victims of the orlando massacre graduated just days ago. eighteen year-old akyra murray was from philadelphia and was one of the 49 victims killed in the pulse nightclub shooting this past weekend, in that night of terror she was held hostage for three hours inside of the club in panic and in fear. she died after taking a bullet to the arm.
now she was an academic and athletic all-star, graduating third in her class, just last week. our team in orlando spoke with her heart broken family. >> sad. disbelief. hurt. >> she was on the phone with me and my mom, i have been shot, i am bleed ago lot, i need you here now. >> since i was a kiddy protect my kids and my cousins. i always protect all of my cousins my girls. >> i want everybody to just know her and what she was all about, just to know loving person, the loving trusting person she was. nobody ever forget what she tried to accomplish in life. >> reporter: in center city akyra's basketball teammates were very emotional at a vigil held in philadelphia city hall. she was planning on attending mercyhurst college on a full athletic scholarship, in the meantime, her family tells our
fox 29's chris o'connell in orlando that the fbi has not even given them the clearance to see her body yesterday adding to their heart break, in such a difficult time, as this investigation continues, chris and lauren. >> of course, dave kinchen, thanks very much. a lot of people asking, why was she in the nightclub in orlando. a lot of the clubs are 18 to go in the party, 21 to drink. >> thanks for the clarification. we are hearing from one of the young laid hoist traveled to orlando with akyra. >> she was lucky enough to live to tell what she saw the night of the shooting. kiana was akyra murray cousin. parker was held hostage inside that bathroom for three hours, lying in the pool of blood after being shot in the stomach. she says that she will always be haunted by the look in the killer's eyes. >> i seen him peak under the stall and look me in my face, i taught my life was over because they said something about him having enough bombs to take out a city block.
>> parker says that she believes other people were involved in the shooting, beside the man. she has been released from the hospital. this morning we are learning new details about omar mateen. he attended pulse club before the attack and used a date dating and chap app. they saw mateen there at least a dozen times. he either sat by himself or got bridge rently drunk. investigators are saying mateen also visited other gay clubs as potential targets. one regular said mateen messaged him on and off for a year before the shooting using the gay dating app jacked. is there also word he may have scouted another popular florida park for another possible attack, there are reports including one from the wall street journal that omar mateen eyed downtown disney as a location for that attack. the report sites law enforcement sources but fbi says they are working to confirm that. other publications claim he
had recently visited that park with his wife. owner of the aforementioned store where orlando shooter bought his weapons is speaking out. the owner is a former nypd detective with more than 20 years of service, he said he sold the two guns to omar mateen legally, in his store but mateen bought a handgun and long gun a week apart according to the owner. the authorities combed the inside of the store as part of the investigation in the shooting and store owner said he followed the law when selling those guns to mateen. >> this man held multiple security licenses. he had an armed and unarmed license. he passed a background check that every single person that purchases a firearm in the state of florida under goes. >> the atf confirms the guns were purchased legally m teen had in criminal history and despite being on the fbi radar he was legally allowed to purchase those firearms. story is still developing of course as new information
comes in you can always find it on our web site at fox 29.com. we have some breaking news here locally this morning, search is on for driver of the car after a young woman is killed in the hit and run on roosevelt boulevard, late last night. >> and officials say her body actually traveled 200 feet, when that car slammed into her. steve keeley is live the at the scene in northeast philadelphia with the very latest, steve, good morning. >> reporter: well, it happened at one of the busiest intersections. it is not just two road but adams and somerdale and they all intersect at the same spot. white or silver minivan is going where this minivan stopped at the light here. you can see you can veer right through this crosswalk, for adams avenue and go up adams avenue. that is what the minivan was doing as she wasness this crosswalk. she had the light. this is around 11:45 last night, so it is dark out, this is not one of the red light cameras intersections but as you can see over here, there are some surveillance cameras, there is one on the pole there that is most visible.
we don't know if any camera captured this or pointed at this point right now, but witnesses were out at that time and you could see people out trying now at the intersection as the light changes. it is a real long light, there is lots of pedestrian lights here so this woman waited for the the light, problem is she was on her cell phone, talking to somebody at the time, so that tells you she wasn't paying 100 percent a tension but she had light she was doing everything, smartly that she is supposed to do, however, this minivan going way faster according to the witnesses then 40 miles an hour speed limit here. you can see, she was knocked out of the slippers she was wearing, police don't know who this young girl is, she may be in her young teens. young girl at most is in her early 20's but you no identification on her, she got hit so hard, thrown so far, that even her earrings were torn from her ears. >> when she got hit the impact caused her to come out of her footwear, both of her slippers
are still on the highway, and her cell phone which she had in her hand is broken, and also on the scene and the earrings that she was wearing were actually torn from her ears and they are also laying on the highway, so she was hit with such impact it caused her body to travel about 200 feet north after being struck by the striking vehicle, that witnesses believe was going at a high rate of speed. >> reporter: she was pronounced dead on the scene at quarter to midnight and chris and lauren, not much of the description other than this van will have obvious front end damage and a smashed windshield over this poor girl had her head hit and been thrown. white or silver but key is you know anybody with a older van and see it all smashed up today police want to you call them. >> absolutely. steve keeley live from northeast philadelphia.
thank you. more breaking news, a car slammed into primeaus hoagies on third and south street. we are told the driver ran up on the sidewalk, hit four people standing in front of the building, all four suffered minor injuries. no ward what caused the driver to loose control. a person riding a bicycle was killed after being hit by a car. sky fox over the scene at route 130 and north park drive before 11:00 last night. investigators shutting down area to traffic while they up investigate. authorities have not released information on the victim. 4:12. showing up in full force to remember a rising star from south jersey. friend, family and entire community show up to remember cristina grimmie, what her brother toll the crowd he remembered the most about his sister. >> ♪

closing arguments continue today. wife of the marlton native and singing sensation, cristina grimmie remembered as hundreds gathered in her hometown for a vigil monday night. 22-year old grimmie was gun down after a concert in orlando during a singing meet and greet friday night. she was a you tube sensation and finalist in 2014. she graduated from cherokee high school and attended fellowship alliance in medford before she and her family moved to los angeles. those who knew cristina spoke well of the aspiring star. >> she loved this town. she loved this state, she loved singing, she loved the lord and she loved me. >> we lose a shining star at 22 years old who had an entire life ahead of her who was living her dream because she work so hard for it, it is devastate to go all of us. >> cristina's funeral will be in medford at the fellowship alliance chapel and adam le vine her coach from the voice, has paid for perfect funeral.
4:19. now an someone throwing a bottle for first base man ryan howard. police say sidney smith of wilmington has turned himself into south detectives. twenty-one year-old was issued a citation for disorderly conduct and was released. he turned himself in on friday. howard was not actually hit by that aluminum beer bottle thrown back on june 4th. in chester the police department launching a body camera program. a group of ten officers has volunteered to wear the cameras during a trial period. this process will allow them to try out different models and brand of cameras. it is only a pie the lot program but the mayor says he hopes it will bring transparency and trust, to the chester community. >> our goal here is concerning public safety. it is to better serve and protect all of our residents. we strongly believe that creating and engaging in these practices will help to create a level of transparency and credibility between our community and police department. >> the cost toss outs fit the

and when she was, crossing the outer lane at adams, a vehicle going north on the boulevard, just exited, and was going north east on adams avenue, struck the female. her body went, rolled on to the hood of this vehicle, she hit her head on the windshield and her body was lifted and traveled 200 feet in the northern direction after being struck and that is when she landed on adams avenue at the boulevard. >> reporter: so no surprise that the first arriving medics had nothing to do other than to pronounce her dead on the scene from massive injuries at 11:45. that young girl not just knocked out of her shoes you can see but both pierced earrings were torn off in this violent crash into her body. police still have no idea who she was, she had no id. police say she's just a teen

year-old akyra murray killed in the deadly orlando shooting. >> with akyra murray was our fox 29 intern patients carter recovering in an orlando hospital and another woman. chris o'connell reports, she came face-to-face with the shooter, omar mateen. >> reporter: victims from philadelphia traveled to orlando for a family vacation, three women went out, one night to go dancing, a night on the town but all three of them ended up being shot on the path room floor of pulse nightclub. this morning we will get a chance to speak with one of those survivors and we do want to warn you some of the details are graphic. >> we thought we would enjoy vacation with my family. that is all we were doing having fun. >> reporter: night out with the girls turned into a bloody massacre, parker from southwest philadelphia, lived to tell about it, after being shot in the stomach. >> he took a hostage in the bathroom. the hours i'm laying in blood. i body fragments on me,
somebody face was blown off. >> reporter: chilling word from the woman who spent three hours as a hostage inside the pulse nightclub during the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. >> like i could hear him talking, i don't have a problem with black people. it is nothing personal. i'm tired of people killing my people. >> reporter: she was with her cousin akyra murray and fox 29 intern patients carter all three were shot in the bathroom. murray, a stand out the at west catholic prep, was begging the gun man omar mateen to let her go. >> my cousin she got hit in the arm, she was begging please, we got hit, please, police report report police broke through a wall to rescue victims but it was too late for murray. she died at the hospital. parker said she believes other people were involve in the shooting, and says that she will forever be haunted by the look in the killer's eyes. >> i seen him peak under the stall and look me in my face and from then on i thought my life was over because it was
not long after that he said something about him having enough bombs to take out a city block. >> reporter: parker says she's happy to be alive but admit she's having trouble dealing with the loss of her cousin. in orlando, chris o'connell for fox 29 news. >> and as chris told us fox 29 intern patients carter was among those wounded in orlando. >> she was at pulse nightclub when the shooter opened fire. she was hit in the leg. her family tells us she underwent surgery and she's in stable condition and she did speak with fox 29's human resource director. >> patients was in surgery last night until 12:30 a.m. her aunt indicated she was shot near her knee so i believe it was knee surgery. i believe that the extent of her physical injuries but emotional injuries. >> of course we are praying for you patients and your speed i recovery. pennsylvania senator bob casey is taking action in light of all this. he is advocating for new
legislation on gun control. democratic senator wants to pass the hate crimes prevention act. bill would extend ban on gun purchases to those convicted of the misdemeanor hate crime, that includes anyone who commits a crime motivated by hate or bias towards a particular race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual ordertation or disability. >> vigils all around the world and across the country are happening to honor those killed in it or land owe nightclub. this morning we will show you how many are unite go to show their support.

tragedy. southwest, allegiance and delta are also offering help for the victim's families. of course, this story is continuing to develop. there is new information that comes out and find it on our web site at fox 29.com. there has been a lot of outpouring of love and support on facebook, instagram, twitter, and one thing that i want to point out having lived in orlando, when i posted a picture of akyra murray, a lot of people started making comments on there about how old she was. she was 17, was she eight. regardless of how old why was she at a nightclub. >> she was 18. her cousin left a comment saying she was 18 years old. she graduate hide school last week. the picture we were seeing with her with her cap and gown were taken last monday but a lot of places in orlando allow you to be 18 to come in but 21 to drink. i don't think there is any discussion whether she was there illegally or legally, she was supposed to be there, i think based on than my knowledge, that picture there, her mother from what we heard last monday after graduation
